Websites for Micro-Businesses

What is a Micro-Business?

A micro-business typically is a one-person operation, based either at home or in a small office. Legally, they are usually sole proprietorships registered by professionals, designers, photographers, writers, crafters, consultants, and too many other trades to name. The business may be a sideline or full-time job. The key distinguishing feature, to my mind, is that that goal is freedom. Micro-business owners love making their own schedule, working from home, and answering to no one but themselves and their clients/customers. In today's economy, many micro-businesses are owned by women. Gradiance Design is a woman-owned micro business. As such, I understand the needs of other micro business owners and identify with your struggles.

A Small Business is Not Just a Grown Up Micro-Business

Small businesses, in contrast, are more likely to be registered as private corporations, LLC's, or partnerships and have brick and mortar premises. They often have employees and fixed hours of business. Think bakeries, coffee shops, gift shops, restaurants, galleries, physician groups, boutiques, etc., and chances are they were originally founded using a small business rather than a micro model. While micro-business owners seek to expand their business, a great many would not give up the autonomy and simplicity of the micro model for the sake of growth. Good things are often found in very small packages.

Micro Businesses are Underserved

Who do you call when you own a micro business and need a website? Several clients have told me that they approached some large web design companies for quotes and never even received a response. Or if they did receive a response, the quote gave them a severe brain freeze. If you don't have deep pockets, what options are left? You can attempt to do it yourself, commandeer an inexperienced relative, or go into debt. These are usually not happy solutions.
