While there are many do-it-yourself website applications available online, nothing can take the place of a site precisely tailored to your specifications and needs.
The web is an inherently visual experience. Layout, color, images, and fonts work together to create a mood that can wordlessly convey your message to your visitors. There is rarely a right answer in graphic design. People's tastes are idiosyncratic, and so I attempt to draw out my clients' preferences and we go from there. If green floats your boat, it's green you shall have.
Databases are simply tightly organized storage areas, and depending on the application, can be used to store passwords, page text, an email list, account information, etc. MySQL has become the most widely used database software on the web. It fits hand in glove with PHP, Linux and the Apache web server.

An entire cottage industry has emerged out of nowhere that is devoted to the dark art called SEO. However, white hat SEO (the only hat I wear) involves no secrets or proprietary techniques. The Google gods themselves offer excellent guidelines which, if followed, may help boost your site's search result rankings. Even with the best optimization techniques, however, the more competition there is for your keywords, the more difficult it will be to get noticed. Please be aware that if you don't have a meaningful advertising budget AND you're in a competitive field, your only recourse will be a lot of hard work.
The future of Flash is uncertain. With the advent of new animation techniques via HTML 5 and the rejection of Flash by Apple, I am currently recommending against its use unless a task can't be accomplished any other way. Pity. It was fun while it lasted.
If you need help with a website written in ASP (the Microsoft web language), you will need to find a programmer who specializes in that language. Websites that were created using certain types of templating engines (such as Smarty or CAKE) are best modified by someone more familiar than I am with the inner workings of the software.
