Web design involves much more than selecting a color scheme and creating graphics. Designing is problem solving. Each client has a unique set of problems that their website must address. These underlying needs determine site architecture, and site architecture determines presentation. For example, a website that offers clients the ability to continually add new content themselves will, of necessity, have a relatively simple layout. In most cases, such websites will be database driven. On the other hand, if a site is to be fairly static over time with all changes to be made by myself or another web professional, the layout can be wildly complex and a database would probably not be needed.
I am a client-centered developer. Your taste, skills, financial budget, and time budget guide the process to the degree you prefer. Some clients prefer to take a hands-off approach, either because they do not feel competent to make web design decisions or because they haven't the time to invest. Clients at the other extreme prefer to be heavily involved in every aspect of the process. Some clients prefer a "minimalist," boxy, graphics style, while others prefer glitz and shimmer and curves. Some like a neutral, subdued color scheme and some prefer a bold, dramatic look. Some clients are artists and prefer that I work from their visuals. Some clients have great writing skills but are tone deaf when it comes to color. Some clients can afford and want to include every web gizmo known to man on their site, others can afford only the most basic of sites. No two clients are alike but all are welcome!
