I ♥ Flash! From a digital artist's standpoint, Flash is the ultimate toy. Seamlessly integrated with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, it invites creativity like a box of brand new crayons. It is also versatile from a programmer's standpoint, interfacing comfortably with XML, JavaScript and MySQL. It is so much fun to work with that it is tempting to dream up excuses for plastering web pages with animations. This is a temptation that needs to be resisted, however. Flash needs to be handled with care.
Should you incorporate Flash into your website? Maybe, maybe not. There are many variables to take into account. For example, is it important that the content within the Flash element be indexed by search engines? Are you hoping to use Flash for a "mission-critical" page element, such as navigation? Is it likely that many of your visitors will not have the Flash player installed? Will an animated element prove too distracting to readers? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then, alas, Flash is probably not the best choice for you at this time. If the answer is no, then let the fun begin!
